He fathered thirteen children, eleven of whom survive. Soon after his wedding he entered the army, and prompted his own discharge, he says, to return home to Montgomery. In the early 1940s, he married a longtime friend, Willie Mae Thomas of Ramer, Alabama. ![]() Tolliver supported himself and his mother by tending other people’s gardens he did general maintenance, house painting, light carpentry, and plumbing as well. Too financially strapped to continue farming, the Tollivers, like so many others, left the farm for the city and moved in the 1930s to Montgomery, to a house on Sternfield Alley (later obliterated by the construction of Interstate 85). He remembers that his parents’ house was “just a shack, but my mama had pictures all over the walls.” He attended school until he was eight or nine, then moved to nearby Macedonia, where he worked for the owner of a dry-cleaning business in Montgomery who also operated a small truck farm in Macedonia. Publicationsīorn Mose or Moses Ernest Tolliver on July 4, 1921, or '22, to tenant farmers Ike and Laney Tolliver in the Pike Road community southeast of Montgomery, Tolliver was one of twelve children. This material is derived from conversations with William Arnett in 19. Said "I'll buy it but you gotta give it a name." I said, "I don't know no name." He say, "You got to think of one." I said, "All right, call it Mose T" He bought every picture I had. I painted pictures from that plate, and this man Robert Bishop bought the first one. Man from the state told me not to paint from the books, said it was wrong. People brought me books to copy out of so I started doing that. The first picture I did on wood was a red bird. When I got hurt, I had more time to paint, and wood was a whole lot easier to get hold of. I painted over pictures that I found too. Painted on the back part of the glass of the television set you look at. I used to paint on glass before I did wood. They didn't want me to go nowhere else to work. If the weather was real bad, the contract I had then let me come in the house, clean up, paint the inside of the house. Rain or shine or whatever else the weather was, I did the work. When the strike went on, they laid everybody off, but I had a contract on about seventy-five yards, and they let me do the work. Peoples say I first painted when I hurt my feet, but I painted way before that. I nailed them outside on the wall but they took them down when they put Christmas lights up. I painted pictures on the part where the meat come from. I got some deer hides once and painted them too. I stuff them and paint them and put varnish on them. If I could find some of them things now it would sell better than anything in this house. And I made eyes out of pins or marbles or pieces of broke glass. Sometimes I put clear varnish on it to make it bright. I would dot them up with all kinds of different stuff, paint and dirt and mud and stuff like that. So I would hang them roots and things from a line and the sun dried them off. ![]() They use them just like y'all use art, put them in their houses for decorating, yeah, colored folks got to decorate too. They would wash them off and paint them and put something like snakes on them, or birds. I learned about that from them men that was doing it. So I would get me some old tree stumps and tree roots and I would wash them all I could. I seen somebody with some when I was 'round about maybe eighteen or nineteen, down by Pike Road, and I wondered how he done it. I found them things out in old vacant lots. ![]() 4/30/2023 0 Comments Going into a black hole![]() This ‘halo’ is actually a visualisation of the heat given out by hot gas swirling around the event horizon – the very edge of the black hole – as it’s being pulled in. ![]() The image shows a bright ring around a black hole 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun, 55 million light years from Earth. In April 2019, an image of a black hole and its shadow in the galaxy Messier 87, part of the Virgo galaxy cluster, was captured for the first time using the Event Horizon Telescope, an array of eight ground-based radio telescopes specifically designed to capture images of a black hole. This was caused by two black holes colliding, 1.3 billion years earlier! 9īlack holes can be located by the effect they have on what’s around them – they suck in gas, dust and stars, which becomes superheated and emits radiation that can then be ‘seen’ as a heat image. Then, a century later in 2015, he was proved correct when gravitational waves were detected for the first time by researchers at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). In 1915, Albert Einstein theorized that when objects move through space, they create waves in spacetime (a concept which fuses space and time) 8 around them, just like ripples moving across the surface of a pond. As a result, huge radio telescopes and gravitational wave detectors are used instead of conventional telescopes. 7īlack holes have such an immense gravitational pull that not even light can escape, so they cannot be seen directly. From general relativity to quantum physics and string theory, black holes offer experts a testing ground for fundamental theories that explain how the universe operates. Einstein’s general relativity says that when matter is pulled into a black hole, its information is destroyed – but quantum mechanics says that cannot happen.Īs a result, black holes are an incredible theoretical playground for astrophysicists and mathematicians, attempting to reconcile the two theories. The forces at play there are so immense that science can’t agree about what happens next. When we look at the centre of a black hole – the ‘singularity’ – it gets complicated. But from there on in – quite literally – they put Einstein’s theory to the test. Einstein’s theory of general relativity 6 states that matter warps time and space, creating what we call gravity – and black holes are incredibly dense conglomerations of matter, hence their incredible gravitational pull. Not only do black holes explain the seemingly chaotic movements of some stars and help make sense of our galaxy, but they represent a new realm of physics for scientists. It is thought that these are the black holes that merge to form the supermassive variety. They’re still a bit of a mystery, with only a few having been discovered, but they’re each believed to have a mass of between 100 and 100,000 Suns. 4 Intermediate-mass black holes are a third category that – as the name suggests – falls somewhere between the previous two. It is thought that this type of black hole reaches its enormous size by merging with other black holes, as well as by subsuming stars. 3 The largest, known as supermassive black holes, can have masses that are millions if not billions of times the mass of the Sun. They form after the centre of a large star collapses, causing a supernova (the explosion of a star). Stellar-mass black holes are the smallest between 1 and 100 times the mass of the Sun. Astronomers believe that most spiral and elliptical galaxies have black holes at their centres. ![]() ![]() ![]() 1īlack holes are objects with extreme density, and the amount of mass they have means they have so much gravitational pull that even light gets trapped. If the core's mass is more than about three times the mass of the Sun, the force of gravity overwhelms all the other forces, the remnant collapses and produces a black hole. Black holes are forged from the small, dense, remnant cores of dead stars. ![]() 4/30/2023 0 Comments Home improvement store![]() ![]() Home improvement and renovations in the U.S. Most homeowners spent between $5,000 and $10,000 improving their homes in 2018, with those in more densely populated and metropolitan areas spending closer to $18,000. The bulk of projects Americans are undertaking are small scale (under $5,000), but big projects such as renovating kitchens and baths are growing in popularity. Homeowner equity assures homeowners that they can indeed afford the projects they could not afford during the great recession. According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies, there is a proven connection between changes in median home values and home improvement spending. As home prices continue to rise, more homeowners are choosing to invest in home improvements and renovations. are experiencing favorable economic conditions that tend to coincide with remodeling activity, such as strong growth in both employment and home value. Tool and equipment rental stretches the budget and increases accessibility to homeowners who would never be able to afford a project otherwise. They stock vast selections of materials that would have been found mainly in contractor supply houses even a decade ago. Both Lowes and Home Depot offer workshops and classes. Homeowners are increasingly choosing the do-it-yourself or DIY option, and big-box stores such as Home Depot make it easier than ever. Home improvement can encompass a project as simple as repainting a room or as complex as gutting an interior. Home improvement spending still outpaces home maintenance spending. In this housing market, the business of the upkeep, maintenance, and improvement of existing properties flourishes. It’s a bit cumbersome to take the taillight on/off compared to the rubber straps you’ll find on standard tail lights like the Topeak Redlite Aero but works well. Four hooks on the mount can be used in conjunction with the o-rings to secure the taillight to a seatpost or helmet. The seatpost / helmet mount uses a quarter turn style holder with a dual o-ring design that is similar to computer mounts. While we didn’t get to try the RX2, we mounted the Raz Pro on our seatpost. Shanren currently offers two mounting options for the Raz Pro: a seatpost / helmet mount known as the RX1 and an optional seat rail bracket which is the RX2. Two sets of mounting o-rings (short/wide).High contrast text and graphics provide an overview of some of the smart features and specs.
